AIN’T TALKING BOUT LOVE a graphic novel by a member of the crew.
1. Alex typically anticipated the worst case scenario. “STUPID, STUPID, I’m so stupid!” she said out loud to herself. The later it got that night, the more paranoid she became.
2. Walking home from summer school earlier that day, Nikki told her not to worry about it. "Those guys are jerks. They'd steal from you if they had the chance!”
“Yeah, but, it’s not like me. Who am I?”
3. “We’ll figure it out. Want to stop at Burger King?” Nikki's stomach was grumbling.
“No! I just want to get home and hide.”
4. Before class that morning, a couple random stoner guys from the run-down apartment complex across the street from the school asked them if they wanted to "smoke out." Nikki only agreed to go into their apartment because they had a dog.
5. The guys were scruffy, small-time drug dealers. They passed a joint around the kitchen table. While Nikki talked to the stoners about their dog, Alex, on impulse, slid some plastic bags from the table into her open backpack. There were plenty more bags still on the table, she reasoned. Maybe they wouldn't notice.
6. Eventually, Danny and Derek would notice.
7 “You’re always freaking out over nothing. I’m telling you. Can we just get fries?" Nikki was always eating. Because she was skinny, her mom would sometimes baselessly call her anorexic.
8. "That was a nice dog, though. What was his name? Bandit?" Nikki chattered on about the dog and about Burger King menu options. Alex was quiet as they walked through the shopping center, worrying more with each step. Those guys looked rough and were way older than her. She wasn't feeling swayed by Nikki's confidence that this was no big deal. But Nikki could talk her way out of anything, especially with guys. She could be mean, too, fueled by a quick temper. Maybe Nikki could help get her out of this.
9. Almost home, Nikki turned back to go see a boy she had a crush on. Alex felt tears starting to rise. “Why do I do stupid stuff?”
CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT Who is Nikki? When she was alone, Nikki was consumed by depression deep inside. It was deep knife in the gut pain. Screaming inside, bleeding tears, fetal position pain. No one knew.
