HELLO! I’M BETHANY MYERS.
Welcome to my creative universe.
I’m not really a painter as much as I push colors around. Bright pallets and complimentary colors create visual harmony. Add a random color and create chaos. There are variations of reality that I can achieve, depending on my emotional climate. When painting I’m very conscious of the academic rules of color, form, line, and tend to break down their structure through different techniques. Sometimes I paint blind. Literally blindfolded. Working that way there is no choice but to deconstruct learned principles and emphasize an internal rhythm rather than a visual one.
Sometimes I strive for extreme detail and hyper scrutinize every brush stroke. In that case the achievement is to paint only what I see and not what I think I know. With these methods in mind I do my best to create in different genres ranging from writing to building a miniature frame. It all depends on the emotions of the day. Maybe today I’ll create a 4’ square acrylic masterpiece or turn a handprint into a turkey. I can be unpredictable, even to myself. I can get very messy with my supplies and the next stay clean drawing on my iPad.
My experience is varied. I’ve taught art to children and seniors, volunteered to create public art and completed paid private commissions, illustrated books and taken photos for newspapers and magazines. I’ve participated in group shows, solo exhibits and curated more than 100 shows for other both well known and unknown artists. I earned a BFA in college but think of myself as a perpetual student of the arts. Success is in the doing, the practicing, and the mistakes. I truly believe no art exists without some value.
